Leather technology, one of India's traditional industries, has evolved significantly with the integration of modern technologies.

With leather being widely used in footwear, apparel, automobiles, and furniture, the sector offers vast employment opportunities. It also places emphasis on sustainable practices, making it an attractive choice for students interested in careers and research with an environmental focus.

Undergraduate Curriculum
The B.E./B.Tech. in Leather Technology is a four-year programme. Students study subjects such as the chemical and physical properties of leather, pre-tanning and tanning processes, colouring and coating techniques, testing and quality assurance, and environmental management.

Eligibility
Applicants must have passed Class 12 or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Admissions are offered through JEE, state-level entrance exams, or university-specific tests. In several states, counselling based on board exam performance is also followed.

Postgraduate Curriculum
The M.Tech./M.E. in Leather Technology is a two-year programme covering advanced leather processing, polymer and leather composites, footwear and leather goods design, environmental aspects, biotechnology applications, quality control, testing, and research methodology. The course includes laboratory training and industry exposure. Research opportunities leading to Ph.D. are also available.

Qualification
A B.E./B.Tech. in Leather Technology or a related discipline is required. Many institutions mandate GATE qualification for admission, while some state and private universities conduct their own entrance tests or interviews.

Job Opportunities
Employment is available in industries, manufacturing units, design departments, and research organisations in India and abroad. Graduates can pursue roles such as leather technologist, process engineer, quality control officer, product designer, tannery supervisor, footwear designer, and research scientist.

Future Prospects
The leather technology sector is poised for growth with rising focus on eco-friendly processes, green technologies, and innovative leather substitutes. Sustainable tanning, recyclable materials, and fashion-driven leather designs are opening new avenues. Opportunities in startups, research, and international markets continue to expand.
