Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi emphasized the importance of intellectual property for national development, urging state universities to prioritize it during an event at the Governor's House.
The ceremony honored Tamil Nadu educational institutions excelling in national rankings.
Recognizing Academic Excellence Governor Ravi awarded certificates of appreciation to 11 top-ranking institutions, highlighting the steady progress of colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu. "We must not rest on our laurels," he said, noting the growing achievements of institutions like Anna University, which now holds the top spot in the state.
He encouraged collaboration between state-run, government-aided, and private institutions, while also praising the remarkable growth in agriculture, engineering, and technical colleges. IIT Madras securing the top national rank was singled out as a source of pride for the state.
Focus on Research and Intellectual Property Governor Ravi also stressed the need for universities to guide research students in securing research grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
He expressed concern over the declining quality of research despite the increasing number of Ph.D. holders. "Universities must focus more on research quality, both in government and private colleges," he stated.
He further urged institutions to concentrate on intellectual property acquisition, noting that while global leaders like China and the U.S. dominate the field, India lags behind with just 2.5% of the world's intellectual property.
The event was attended by IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, vice-chancellors, and principals from various universities and colleges.
